I am as radiant as the sun

One of my favorite quotes from the Hunger Games Trilogy is “I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun.” spoken by Katniss Everdeen. I love this quote so much; I got it engraved on my body over the weekend. Many people have asked me the meaning behind it, others just rolled their eyes as if I’m “full of myself” for getting the words “Radiant as the sun” tattooed on my body. Well, I am here to set the record straight.

There is not one day that goes by that I don’t look in the mirror and I pick myself apart in some way. Whether it’s “I look fat today” or “why is my nose so big?” maybe “I have a zit the size of a dime today” or “I wish I didn’t have big hips”.  When I look in the mirror and pick myself apart, whatever the reason may be in the moment, the second I glare at that tattoo I’ll be reminded of who I really am. I’m not the ink on my body, the fat on my legs, the birth mark on my nose, the hair I forgot to brush, the clothes I wear, “I am not pretty, I am not beautiful, I am as radiant as the sun.” I just need to be reminded more often than others.

When one looks up at the sun, it’s quite difficult to stare directly into the sun due to how bright it shines. When I look in the mirror, or when other people look at me, I want them to see past my physical appearances. Forget the clothes I’m wearing or the color of my hair. Take a chance to get to know me and see that my inside outshines my outside. I want to be known for the beauty inside, because beauty truly does come within. I want that beauty inside to shine so bright, I become as radiant as the sun.

You are as radiant as the sun. Take a moment from your day today to really look in the mirror and see your true beauty. Forget the flaws you see. Look past all those flaws and love who you are. If you can’t do that, then make a change. Hate your job? Find a new one. Dislike someone in your life? Confront them or remove them. Sick and tired of starting over? Then stop giving up! Mark today as the day you are going to work towards loving yourself and loving the skin you’re in. It’s not going to be easy, I promise you that. I will probably live the rest of my life picking myself apart piece by piece, but once I snap out of it, I will remember that I am as radiant as the sun. There is not a cloud that will cover this sunshine. If you choose to disagree and become a cloud in my sky, you will see how quickly the world will turn and my sunshine will be out of your way. Those who choose to be negative are 99% of the time jealous of the things you do and the success you are having. People are going to talk whether you’re doing bad or good. I have come to terms with that. So let them talk while you live and enjoy your life!

I end this with a line from one of my favorite songs, “Follow your arrow” by Kacey Musgraves, “You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. So you might as well just do whatever you want.”
